Statement:
These words may leave you curious, with a mental appetite that you will satisfy or they may leave you not interested at all. These words may leave you warm with a smile on your face or cold with a frown. In the end just know these words came from my heart and they are from a pure man. I have had a good deal of trouble trying to better myself, from lacking materials to educate myself to extreme situations where I had to hurt people to survive. Throughtout my ups and downs I discovered art, and in art I found my salvation. It began as simply an outlet, to express the feelings I had inside. As I poured my raw emotions out onto paper or canvass, it made me confront an aspect of myself which I had previously shied away from. The beauty, strength and emotion one can relate from mind to canvass, it is overwhelming and healing at the same time. Since then I have continued to evolve as both an artist and a person

Vita / Lebenslauf:
What is the purpose of Art? If one were to do a survey, it is likely that responses to such question would be numerous and varied as the different genres of Art. Some would call it a method of self expression, a way of airing the things which an artist cannot reveal by mere spoken word. Others would take a more pregmatic or perhaps cynical, view, by naming it a means to an end; the vehicle by which some find their way to fortune and fame. I, on the other hand, would reject any such definition as being too self servingly narrow and only a description of what an individual might use art for, rather than the truth of Art itself. In my eyes, the purpose of Art is no less than the elevation of society to a higher plane, through the stimulation of imagination in the minds of it's viewers. The sad fact is most modern Art regardless of genre fails most miserably in doing so. It exists and is even seen as good or great, by popular acclaim. Not due to any actual inherent value it possesses on its own, but solely because of some indefinite emphemeral whim of pop culture and the media. Anyone whom may not agree that things of no value may earn popularity need only watch an episode of a reality TV show such as the Jersey shore in order to discover theirselves indisputably wrong. I find myself unmoved by much of today's music. I remain untouched by most modern perfomance Art. The paintings of contemporary Artists leave me cold. Why is this? because of the lack of imagination which permeates our society as a whole. Is this any wonder? Look at the cities in which we live. Though there may be some small exceptions, where innovation and beauty shine, for the most part our architechture is grey, and grim. This is certainly not from a lack of proper building material, not from a dearth of technical ability. From the slums and Barrios, to the High-rise apartments of the wealthy, the buildings which make up our environment are esthetically repellent, because they are so destitute of all imagination. No one should ever fool themselves into the belief that their surroundings do not dictate their state of mind to a great degree. Just as a comfortable physical life cannot be found without comfortable physical surroundings, so an imaginative mind cannot exist without an environment which stimulates the imagination. No one becomes what they are by nature alone. We all reflect the culture in which we participate. Grim, imaginative cities breed grim, unimaginative citizens and encourage the proliferation of crime ,indifference and hate..Percy Bysshe Shelly said:"The imagination is the greatest instrument of moral good." He was speaking of a person's ideas about and treatment of his fellow man is totally dependent upon that person's ability to put themselves imaginatively in the others place. When you can truly identify with another person, and by imagination see what they see, feel what they feel, you cannot do them wrong. For that wrong you would be doing to yourself. Thus, TRUE ART< which stimulates the imagination, is the single strongest influence for the betterment of society as a whole. I wish more Artist realized this. For myself, I keep it in mind every time I sit down at my easel I aim to stimulate imagination evoke emotion, make viewers feel and think.
DO I succeed, and do justice to my obligations as an artist? Only you may say. Edgar B. Garcia # 28132177 From Fedaral Death Row...
